Swedes' Johnson solid at tourney

NEWTON — Bethany College’s Ben Johnson showed he’s capable of competing against some of the top golfers in NAIA as he wound up finishing the two-day Mid-South Classic in fifth place.

Johnson, an NAIA All-American last year, shot rounds of 68-71-75 over the two days for a 214 total, four shots back of champion Billy McKenzie of William Woods.

The Swedes as a team were seventh with a 906 total. William Woods was the winner with an 848.

Jose Acevedo tied for 12th with 76-67-74-217. Other Swede totals were Scott Farrall (82-750-82-239), Josef Laughlin (77-83-81-241) and Olly Rubenstein (80-80-88-248).

“Again, Ben  and Jose stepped up,” Bethany coach Jon Daniels. said “We have work to do. We need three guys to step up."

The Swedes play Oct. 6-7 at Hutchinson’s Carey Park in a tournament hosted by Sterling College.
