NORTH NEWTON — KCAC preseason men’s soccer favorite McPherson College began conference play just as the preseason polls indicated.
The Bulldogs went on the road to blank Bethel College, 2-0.
The margin probably should have been more, but the Bulldogs could not take advantage of their numerous opportunities. They missed the mark the entire first half before Brayam De La Cruz cashed in a penalty kick and then Alex Ronneburg provided the insurance goal.
“We controlled things with our possession today,” McPherson College coach Doug Quint said.
Aaron Parrott had to make only three saves in goal to notch his fifth win of the year.
The Bulldogs are now 5-3-1 overall and the KCAC race could very well be decided on Wednesday when defending champion Kansas Wesleyan invades McPherson Stadium for a 4 p.m. match. The Coyotes are ranked No. 13 in the country and were picked right behind the Bulldogs in the preseason poll.
• McPherson College women 2, Bethel 0 — The Mac women joined the men as a KCAC leader after the first weekend of play.
Like the men, the Mac women could not dent the scoreboard until the second half. Finally, Cydney Lewis registered the game’s first tally and Rhea Vale added the second goal off a Rebekah Gallegos-Romero pass.
The Bulldogs peppered the Thresher goal for 22 shots as they dominated the game.
Tori Verdieck turned away six Bethel shots to earn the shutout win in goal for Mac.
The Bulldogs, who are now 3-6-1 overall, face perhaps the best team in the KCAC on Wednesday when they host Kansas Wesleyan at 6:30 p.m.
