NEWTON — McPherson High cross country coach Gentry Nixon said that Saturday’s picture-perfect weather conditions helped her team turn in one of its best performances of the year in the Newton Invitational.

Eleven personal-best times were turned in by Bullpup runners and another four ran their top marks of the year.

“It was a good day to run fast,” Nixon said. “It was fun to watch. They also stayed true to form for this season using their own teammates as their best competition and motivation. The girls especially used the pack mentality with several of them racing each other at the finish. It's hard to talk about standouts today because there were several. Outstanding effort today.”

Christina Wankum led the MHS girls by taking 34th, one place ahead of teammate Michelle Carrillo. Wyatt Hedlund topped the boys in 41st.

MHS competes Saturday at El Dorado.
