STERLING — The Bethany College Swedes continue to be their own worst enemy.
Sterling’s Reggie Langford scored on a 4-yard run with 21 seconds left in the game Saturday to rescue the Warriors for a 42-39 victory in a game in which the statistics say the Swedes should have won by at least 20.
The Swedes gouged the Warriors for 509 yards while Bethany stuffed Sterling to just 240, but for the second week in a row careless football cost the Swedes the win as they followed up last week’s six-turnover performance with five more.
Bethany fell to 1-2 in the KCAC and a five-way tie for sixth. The Swedes are 2-3 overall, but could easily be 4-1.
Among the turnovers was a blocked punt, which the Swedes suffered for the second straight week.
Sterling said, “thank you very much” for the gifts, as the five miscues were converted into 23 Warrior points, the only reason they had any semblance of a chance.
Bethany wasted some terrific performances. Freshman sensation Jasaan Eley shredded the Warriors for 216 yards rushing and Bethany totaled 335 on the ground. Jake Umphreyville added 174 yards through the air and a TD pass to Rodney Molette.
Both defenses failed to show up in the first half as the Swedes led 31-23. Eley, Molette, Drake Wells and Tim Hill all scored for the Swedes, Hill’s being a 70-yard punt return. Adam Maisch added a field goal.
Umphreyville scored the lone BC touchdown in the second half, with the other two points coming on a safety, which occurred after Umphreyville fumbled on the Sterling 1 when it appeared he was going to score a touchdown. Bethany did get two points out of it moments later, but those missed points proved fatal.
The Swedes host suddenly resurgent Southwestern on Saturday. The Moundbuilders, who had looked bad in losing their first four games, shocked No. 3 Tabor in overwhelming fashion on Saturday, 27-6.
