SALINA — It was a lost weekend for McPherson’s seventh-grade volleyball A-team.

The Bullpups were an uncharacteristic 0-4 Saturday in the Salina Lakewood Invitational.

“We started off sluggish in our first match, but improved as the day went on,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “We faced some good teams today. Lakyn Schieferecke had great hustle today, and Anna Nason came in and made some great passes as libero, a position she just started playing on Thursday. It was just the little things that added up—too many dropped balls and missed serves. We still need to work on staying together as a team, even when we are down.”

The Bullpups lost to Salina South (8-25, 10-25), Hays (19-25, 19-25), Salina Lakewood (12-25, 19-25) and Great Bend (18-25, 22-25).

The B-team was 0-2 on the weekend with losses to Hays (13-25, 11-25) and Great Bend (16-25, 25-15, 6-15).

“With one of the girls being gone, the rest of the team had to make some adjustments,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “We handled the change well, but had some untimely errors that really hurt us. In the second set against Great Bend, we made our serves and played great. Unfortunately, we were unable to close out the match, but I was proud that the girls never gave up."

The Bullpups wrap up the season Tuesday when they travel to Fort Riley.
