The McPherson Public Library is the newest FamilySearch Affiliate Library.  This designation means that library patrons now will have greater and more convenient access to the wealth of genealogy resources available through the extensive FamilySearch database.

FamilySearch is the world’s largest repository of free genealogical records and manages the famous Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.  It has amassed billions of birth, marriage, death, census, land, court, and other records from over 130 countries.

FamilySearch is extending access to its collections by making available microfilms of these historic records through select public libraries – and now the McPherson Public Library is among them.

“We are very excited that our library has been awarded Affiliate Library status,” said Library Director Steve Read.  “This is a priceless resource for our patrons interested in discovering their family tree.”

In making the announcement, Paul Nauta, FamilySearch Public Affairs Manager, commented that “less than 5% of the world’s genealogical records are available online, and most family history researchers cannot afford to travel to an archive.  If FamilySearch has filmed the records they need, then as far as they will need to travel to view them is the McPherson Public Library.”

Persons interested in using the service may visit the library website at www.macpl.org and select the Local History & Genealogy option from the Resources section of the menu.  They will find a link and a tutorial about how to search for resources and order microfilm online.  There is a fee of $7.50 to cover shipping and processing, and once the film arrives at the library, patrons have 60 to 90 days to peruse it.

McPherson Public Library staff are available to assist patrons in searching for records on FamilySearch and using this new service.

FamilySearch has over 200 camera teams filming historic records in 45 countries on any given day.  Those records are then available for use by patrons through FamilySearch Affiliate Libraries like the McPherson Public Library.
