SALINA — McPherson’s eighth-grade volleyball team emerged from Tuesday’s East-West Challenge with a 1-2 record.

MMS defeated Manhattan Eisenhower (25-20, 25-18), but lost to Junction City (23-25, 22-25) and Manhattan Anthony (15-25, 11-25).

That leaves the Bullpups with an 8-8 record.

“The girls played some great volleyball in all three matches,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “There were many hustle plays and saves all night. I am proud of the girls for continuing to improve and work hard each day to get better. We are showing more consistency and playing together as a team.”

The B-team is now 16-3 after a 1-2 day. The Bullpups’ win came against Manhattan Eisenhower (25-9, 25-27, 15-12), while they lost to Manhattan Anthony (19-25, 24-26) and Junction City (25-20, 17-25, 10-15).

“We played hard against all three teams, with really good competition across the board,” MMS coach Danica Fitzmorris said. “We beat ourselves in both the losses, turning in missed serves, and having difficulty passing. The girls did not give up and fought hard through all the matches.”
