The McPherson High Invitational Volleyball Tournament appears to be top-heavy on Saturday.
There are four teams that have visions of playing for a state championship, while the other four are hoping to gain some traction in their bids to reach the .500 mark.
The action gets under way at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Roundhouse.
“We’re looking forward to the challenge and (playing) new teams,” said MHS coach Christy Doile, who noted there are some great programs and legendary coaches coming to town.
MHS, 24-4 on the year, is the No. 2 seed. It’s in a pool with Carroll (17-3), Nickerson (10-17) and Goddard (5-15).
Defending Class 2A champion Hillsboro, now in Class 3A, is the tourney’s overall No. 1 seed. The Trojans are 19-1 and no doubt will be fueled by the thought of slaying big-school teams. Hutchinson (17-10), Salina South (11-18) and Salina Central (6-20) join the Trojans in their pool.
MHS’ first match is against Goddard. Nickerson is next up for the Bullpups, then Carroll.
Two matches will be played at the same time in the Roundhouse, with matches also in the auxiliary gym.
