McPherson’s eighth-grade football team surrendered a late touchdown as Salina Lakewood outlasted the Bullpups 14-6 here Thursday in MMS’ last home appearance of the season.
“It was a gutsy performance. We were short four starters,” MMS coach Brandon Labertew said. “We had a lot of kids step up today that have not had a lot of varsity experience. I thought Brandon Yowell, Gage Jarvis, Zach Brewer, Ben Hopkins and Dawson VanGoethem really stepped up and played well when needed today. Gabe Hoover had a good first half before being lost to an injury.”
The Bullpups' score was a 25-yard pass from Hoover to Elijah Muehler.
Jace Kinnamon led the Bullpups with 56 yards on 10 carries. Hoover was 3 of 6 for 50 yards before going down. Muehler had a key interception, while Kinnamon and Yowell were tops in tackles with six apiece and Yowell had a pair of pass breakups.
MMS wraps up its season next week with a pair of games in Haysville. Tuesday, the team plays Haysville Middle School, then against Haysville West on Thursday.
