GREAT BEND — McPherson’s eighth-grade volleyball team emerged from the Great Bend Invitational on Saturday with a third-place finish.
MMS was 1-1 in pool play, splitting a pair of three-setters. It was nipped by Hays (14-25, 25-19, 14-16) before charging back to outlast Salina South (23-25, 25-21, 15-11).
MMS started bracket play with a 25-17, 25-21 win over Great Bend, but lost a tough three-setter to old nemesis Salina Lakewood (22-25, 25-21, 13-15).
The Bullpups came back to again beat Salina South for third, 25-22, 25-23. Hays beat Lakewood for the title.
MMS coach Jacque Gehrt was pleased how her team hung tough through the long-and-grueling day.
“The girls battled through five long, intense matches today,” Gehrt said. “We had excellent digs and hustle plays by all the girls, especially Chelsea Stoppel, Kallie Jost and our libero, Lauren Hein. Our middle hitters, Kolbi Partain and Michaela Bowers, stepped up their play at the net and were aggressive all day on offense and defense. Jaycee Burghart and Addie Fitzmorris were stellar in controlling the offense. Our other hitters Kari Ellet, Meghan Smith, and Megan Saverino, did great on placing their hits. Overall, it was an outstanding team effort.”
MMS, 11-10 on the year, completes its season Tuesday at Salina.
