Pontious earned national honor last month

OVERLAND PARK – McPherson High graduate Briana Pontious earned the NJCAA Division II Volleyball National Player of the Week honor last month.

Pontious, a sophomore at Johnson County Community College, was eligible for the award after being named the Kansas Jayhawk Juco Conference/Verizon Wireless Player of the Week for Week 3, with voting announced on Sept. 11.

The week Pontious was named she had 70 kills and hit an impressive .323. She registered double figures in kills in four of her five matches, including a one-match career high of 21.

Johnson County currently is 18-7 on the season, 5-1 in the Jayhawk Conference.
