WINFIELD — McPherson High’s volleyball team secured the AVCTL Division III championship Tuesday night with a routine sweep of Winfield and Buhler.
The Bullpups, undefeated in D-III play, rolled to 25-10, 25-10 victories over Winfield and 25-19, 25-22 successes against Buhler
MHS is now one victory shy of the magical 30-win mark as it is 29-6. It has not lost in any triangular action this year as all the losses are in tournament play, three of them at Ottawa to Class 6A schools.
Megan Pedersen led in kills with 16, while Magan Alexander added 12. Rhianna Smith was tops in assists with 26 and Pedersen chipped in with 13. Hannah Marshall (9), Alexander (8) and Addie Simon (6) were tops in digs, while Alexander (3) led in aces.
"We were more focused playing Winfield this time in comparison to the first matchup, they had scored 19 or 20 points," MHS coach Christy Doile said. "We wanted to put an emphasis on closing blocks, staying in defensive posture, receive higher than 2.25 and only miss one serve on the night as a team. Blocks and defensive posture were locked in, but we missed our serve receive and serving goal. We will continue to work on that at practice."
The MHS JV team also had little trouble, easing past Winfield (25-11, 25-14) and Buhler (25-20, 25-16) to move to 18-8 on the year.
“We are seeing so much improvement since the beginning of the year,” MHS coach Diane Marshall said. “I am so proud of the how hard the girls are working.”
The JVs compete in the AVCTL Championships this weekend at Maize. Other teams are Derby, Campus, Hutchinson, Newton, Salina Central and Salina South.
The varsity takes the weekend off before returning to action Tuesday at Clearwater. It’s the last regular-season match of the year.
