ANDALE — Ice cream cake did the trick Thursday for McPherson High’s ninth-grade volleyball team.
With her team up against chief tormentor Andale, Bullpup coach Emile Blakesley had a novel idea.
“We haven't beat Andale at all this year and the girls were determined that this is their night” Blakesley said. “During the second set I called a timeout and asked them what I had to do to get them going. I asked them if ice cream cake would do it ... next thing you know we turned the switch on and won. Needless to say I owe them ice cream cake tomorrow after school.”
The Bullpups swept Andale 25-17, 25-15 and also defeated El Dorado (24-26, 25-14, 25-12) and Winfield (25-10, 25-21) to finish the day 3-0.
“We played our hearts out,” Blakesley said. “We were disciplined tonight and we had some fight in us. I'm very proud of our bench tonight, they were into the game. They were standing up and cheering and giving the girls on the court confidence. Very proud of my girls, they deserve it.”
MHS will take a lot of momentum into Saturday’s league meet at Salina Central.
