HAYSVILLE — The McPherson eighth-grade football team came a long way this year.
After just one win last year as seventh-graders, the Bullpups finished a 4-3 season Thursday night with a 32-14 loss to Haysville West, which couldn’t take away from everything the team accomplished this year.
“The kids played hard the entire night and have shown great improvement over this past season,” MMS coach Brandon Labertew said. “I want to congratulate the kids on a good season and thank the parents and fans for their support.”
Labertew said Haysville West had the best passing attack the Bullpups had faced this year and that it was a challenge for the defense.
Kyler Hoppes scored on a 3-yard run, with a 2-pointer from Elijah Muehler. Jace Kinnamon capped the Bullpup scoring with a 14-yard dash.
Kinnamon bulldozed to 71 yards on 14 carries and also came up with five tackles on the other side of the ball. Hoppes was 8 of 18 for 111 yards, with Chandler Wiard catching three for 56 and Muehler three for 35. Kinnamon had two receptions out of the backfield for 20 yards.
Honestee Whittker led the Bullpups in tackles with six.
