Saint Mary proved to be the perfect Homecoming Weekend foil for McPherson College’s soccer teams.
The Bulldogs posted identical 5-1 victories over the Spires to send everyone home with some pep in their step.
• Mac women 5, Saint Mary 1 — The Bulldogs erupted for four second-half goals to put away the Spires, capitalizing on a 26-13 advantage in shots.
Rhea Vale, Cydney Lewis, Haley Anderson, Morgan Anderson and Cheyanne Smith all scored single tallies as the Bulldogs spread the wealth. Lewis and Haley Anderson were credited with assists.
Mac is 2-3 in the KCAC and 4-9-1 overall. It plays Wednesday at Tabor.
• Mac men 5, Saint Mary 1 — The Bulldog men, meanwhile, did their business early, piling up four first-half goals before putting it on cruise control.
Nick Torres, who had a hat trick in the last game, posted two more goals as he’ll be the leading candidate for KCAC Player of the Week. Scoring singletons were Oscar Cortez, Leonel Martinez and Alex Ronneburg, who also had two assists. Cortez and Brayam De La Cruz had one apiece.
“This was another important game for us to stay in the hunt for a conference championship," Mac coach Doug Quint said. "We had a great first-half performance and need to learn to sustain that level for 90 minutes. Due to our continued injury bug there were once again guys that stepped up and played really solid minutes. It was nice to see. We have a tough road week coming up and need to continue to focus and control our destiny."
The Mac men are now 8-3-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the conference as they are tied for the top spot with Kansas Wesleyan. Perhaps a potential speed bump is next up as the Bulldogs play Wednesday at Tabor, always a thorn in the Bulldogs’s side.
