EMPORIA — If the Hesston Swathers live up to their seed, they should live to play another day in the Class 3A State Volleyball Tournament at venerable White Auditorium.

The third-seeded Swathers, 35-3 with two of the losses to Hillsboro, open pool play today at 4:30 p.m. against 30-9 Silver Lake. That’s followed at 6:30 by a match against 32-11 Seneca-Nemaha Central before wrapping up at 8:30 against dreaded nemesis Hillsboro (36-3).

The top two teams advance from the pool.

Teams on the other side include Douglass (36-2), Southeast of Cherokee (19-19), Wellsville (35-5) and Lakin (31-9).

The semifinals Saturday start at 2 p.m.

“Our pool at state will be tough, but we have faced good competition this year that has prepared us for this opportunity,” Hesston coach Jason Peters said. “We look forward to the challenge to compete against the best in the state, and put our hard work this year to the test.”

The Swathers will be led by kill leaders Caylee and Cami Richardson. Jessanna Nebel quarterbacks the team as she’s the assist leader, while the Richardsons and Kelsey Unruh are counted on for digging. Hannah Weber also has contributed in several areas.
