DES MOINES, Iowa — Central Christian College’s women’s basketball team could have picked a couple of easier opponents to start its season with.

The Lady Tigers, who gave up 116 points on Friday to powerful Grand View University in their initial game, took on an even more formidable foe on Saturday, losing to national contender Mount Mercy, 118-62. Mount Mercy received votes in the preseason national poll.

The winners scorched it both from the field (42 of 78) and the line (29 of 37) in handing the Lady Tigers their second straight loss.

Libby Regier scored 16 points for CCC and Kelly Smit followed up her 24-point game of Friday with 14 more.

The Lady Tigers will come way down in competition on Tuesday when they host Barclay College in their Alexander Arena debut. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

CCC (62) — Smit 14, Campa 2, Shaw 5, Void 5, Laskowski 9, Regier 16, Garza 5, LaBrane 3, Salazar 3.

Mount Mercy (118) — Herb 31, Oldham 6, Timma 4, Last 11, Zeitler 12, Blietz 2, Weiland 5, Sexton 6, Schaffer 4, Dolan 15, Janitti 22.
