LAWRENCE — T.J. Grant has picked up where he left off.

Grant, who finished last season with a flourish after being inserted into the starting lineup for the final seven games, scored 28 points Saturday night as McPherson College’s men won their basketball season opener against Haskell, 94-81.

It took the Bulldogs a half to get warmed up as they trailed 45-41. But they exploded for 53 second-half points and tightened down on the defensive end as well.

The diminutive 5-8 Grant was sensational, knocking down 5 of 7 from beyond the arc and 9 of 10 free throws to highlight his career-night effort.

DeAndre Henson, who came off the bench last year, looked strong in his first start with 15 points. Darius Hill, who missed all of last year with a knee injury, was a monster inside with 14 points and long-armed his way to 16 rebounds. Ramon Martinez came off the bench for 12 points and Page Beeler scored 10 points and hauled in eight rebounds.

Stand Lovato led Haskell with 19 points.

A plus for Mac was that it committed just six turnovers. Kenny Berry had a solid floor game with a team-high seven assists.

Freshman Aaron Buchera provided a spark off the bench by making three 3-pointers for nine points.

The Bulldogs stay on the road Tuesday to take on Manhattan Christian, with game time 7 p.m.

Mac (94) — Grant 28, Henson 15, Hill 14, Beeler 10, Berry 5, Martinez 12, Buchera 9, Lakin 1.

Haskell (81) — Lovato 19, Pittman 17, Rudd 16, July 13, Sequoyah 8, Bruns 6, Johnson 2.

• HASKELL WOMEN 76, MAC 56 — Haskell is expected to be an MCAC power this season and already had beaten Bethany by 41 points earlier in the week.

The Bulldogs obviously had some first-game jitters as they committed a whopping 27 turnovers.

Bailey Brown led the Bulldogs with 15 points. Sunny Smart scored 12 and newcomer Georgia Smart added 10.

The Bulldogs have no bargain Tuesday when they travel to Bartlesville to play Oklahoma Wesleyan, which will be joining the KCAC next season.
