DENVER — McPherson College's first men's basketball loss of the season is going to be one the Bulldogs will be kicking themselves about.
The Bulldogs were cruising along with a 12-point second-half lead over undefeated Northern New Mexico Friday in the Johnson and Wales Classic when they got stuck on the 52-point mark.
The Bulldogs were seemingly there forever and the Eagles came back to tie and actually went ahead. However, the teams battled to a 73-73 tie at the end of regulation.
In the OT, the Eagles took command early and held off a late Bulldog run for an 87-85 victory.
The Eagles had come into the game averaging more than 100 points and owned a victory over top KCAC contender Saint Mary.
The Bulldogs were up 45-35 at the half behind freshman reserve guard Aaron Bachura, who scored 11 points in the first 20 minutes on perfect shooting, making 3 of 3 from the field — two of them treys — and 3 of 3 at the line.
The Bulldogs as a team drained eight 3-pointers in the half. The Eagles stayed in the game behind Gabriel Martinez, who poured in 16 points.
Due to a computer malfunction from Johnson and Wales' stat crew as the stat stream froze, final numbers are not available at the time of this post.
Mac, now 2-1, plays the host Johnson and Wales on Saturday.
