The State Board of Education will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday and Thursday, and on Thursday is scheduled to select a new commissioner of education.

Four candidates were selected as finalists for the job. They are McPherson USD 418 Superintendent Dr. Randy Watson, John Barge, state superintendent of schools, Georgia; Gillian Chapman, associate superintendent Shawnee-Mission USD 512;  and Brad Neuenswander, interim commissioner.

The board conducted candidate interviews earlier this month.

The job was vacated earlier this year when Diane DeBacker resigned to serve as senior advisor to the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

On Wednesday, the board will receive reports on history and social studies standards, discuss emergency safety intervention and discuss possible legislative recommendations in light of the recent announcement that the state is facing severe revenue shortfalls.
