McPherson’s seventh-grade girls were all over Great Bend in their basketball season opener on Thursday at Park School.
The Bullpups steamrolled to a 43-12 victory behind 14 points by Lakyn Schieferecke and 12 more by Cassie Cooks. Andrea Sweat just missed doubles with nine.
“The girls played well for their first game,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “Tough defense and aggressive offensive play allowed us to come away with the win. I was proud of the effort they gave.”
The B-team eased its way to a 16-9 triumph as Kaliyah Tice topped the chart with six points.
“Many of the girls on B-team have never played before and they did a good job of playing hard the whole game,” Gehrt said. “We have a lot to work on, but did just enough to get the victory.”
The A-team is at Great Bend on Saturday and will play Colby and Goodland, weather permitting.
