JUNCTION CITY — McPherson’s seventh-grade girls turned up the defensive heat Monday for a 27-4 basketball walloping of Junction City.

Andrea Sweat led a balanced offensive attack with eight points as the Bullpups are now 2-0 on the season.

“We had to mix up our offense because of their man-to-man defense and the girls handled it nicely,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “We were able to get to the basket, although we missed some easy buckets. We played aggressively on defense and only allowed one 3-pointer and a free throw.”

The B-team led 17-2 at the half on its way to a 26-12 triumph. Again the scoring was balanced, with Josie Strathman leading the way with seven points.

“I'm overly proud of their flexibility with learning new plays on the spot,” MMS coach Jennifer Love said. “These girls showed they are coachable.”

The B-team also is 2-0.

The Bullpups are home Thursday to take on Abilene.

MMS A (27) — Sweat 8, Schieferecke 6, Cooks 5, Pham 4, Johnson 2, Nelson 2.

MMS B (26) — Strathman 7, Carlson 5, Pham 4, Newboles 4, Tice 3, Winsky 2, Cecenas 1.
