McPherson’s seventh-grade A-girls rolled to a pair of basketball victories Saturday in the annual McPherson Jamboree at the Roundhouse.
Against Emporia, a 12-0 second-quarter Bullpup run was the difference in a 33-19 victory. Lakyn Schieferekce topped MMS with 10 points and Andrea Sweat added eight.
Against Salina South, it was a 9-0 shutout in the first quarter that was the difference in a 30-17 success. Cassie Cooks couldn’t be stopped, pouring in 19 points.
“With a limited rotation, the girls had to play more minutes than the other games this season and they handled it well,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “We attacked well against Emporia and pounded the ball inside against South. I was proud of their effort in both games.”
MMS is now 5-0 on the year. It plays Tuesday at Emporia.
The B-team split its games. Against Emporia, the Bullpups used an 11-0 second-quarter blitz to take an 18-10 win. N’Dya Collins’ six points were tops.
MMS lost to Salina South, 13-11. Kaliah Tice and Shianne Newboles scored four points apiece. The visitors won the game on a basket with 5 seconds left.
“The girls gave it their all until the last second,” MMS coach Jennifer Love said. “We look forward to meeting South again soon.”
The B-team is now 4-1.
