The road to Salina for McPherson High’s basketball teams will go through Hays.

That’s the site for the Bullpups’ Class 4A Division I sub-state tournament, scheduled for March 5-7.

And it’s a tough one. Joining MHS and Hays will be Buhler and Ulysses. The winners, of course, advance to the Salina Bicentennial Center.

The Bullpup boys, the defending state champions, certainly will be tested by Hays. The Indians were a perfect 20-0 during the regular season last year before finishing 23-2 and fourth in Class 5A. They are dropping down this year and return one of the state’s best players in 6-7 Brady Werth.

Buhler’s girls figure to be the favorite if you go by the preseason outlooks. The Crusaders return two potential All-State performers in Jessica Steffen and Alex Keller, as well as starting inside player Kelli Burns.

Here are the other sub-states involving the McPherson area schools:

• Smoky Valley — at Nickerson (Clearwater and Wichita Trinity Academy)

• Inman — at Inman (Coldwater, Berean Academy, Greensburg, Medicine Lodge, Moundridge, Peabody and St. John)

• Canton-Galva — at Claflin (Ell-Saline, Central Plains, Ellinwood, Lincoln, Little River, Plainville and Smith Center)

• Hesston — at Hesston (Southeast of Saline, Halstead, Hillsboro, Trinity Cathlolic, Lyons, Marion and Sterling)

• Elyria Christian School — at Sylvan Grove (Chase, Central Christian, Sylvan-Lucas Unified, Tescott and Wilson)
