The McPherson Public Library is issuing a challenge to all readers this month: December 1st marked the start of the library’s The Heat is On event, with the goal of patrons checking out 14,000 items in December. Patrons are invited to stop by, check out any type of item, and watch the thermometer at the main desk rise each day!
“We thought that ending 2014 with a banner month of circulation would be a great way to end the year,” said Jennie Hall, Head of Adult Services at the library. “We set the goal of 14,000 items based on the fact that our circulation numbers in December for the last decade have come very close, but never topped 14,000 items. It seems appropriate that December 2014 might be the year we could reach our 14,000 item goal. ”
All checkouts count towards the total, but patrons can join the fun by keeping track of their checkouts this month. They may stop by the service desk for a bookmark, on which staff members will record totals each time a patron checks out. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the month to the two people who check out the most items. There are two categories of prizes: the adult grand prize is an unframed copy of the art print "A Kansas Bouquet" by local artist Robert Smith, and the kids category grand prize is a bag full of brand new books. Second and third runners-up in each category will also receive a prize.
Bookmarks must be turned in before 8 p.m. on January 6, 2015 and the prize winner will be notified later that week.
