LINDSBORG — When the Bethany College men open the KCAC portion of their basketball schedule Thursday hosting county rival McPherson College, they’ll do so with a brand-new national ranking.

The Swedes checked in at No. 24 when the first NAIA Division II poll was announced on Tuesday.

Bethany is 5-2 on the year, with the high-water mark being a victory over St. Gregory’s, an NAIA Division II Final Four team from last year that returned all of its starters.

“The recognition is good for Bethany College and Bethany basketball, but we must focus on getting better each and every day,” Swede coach Clair Oleen said. “There is much work to do.”

Saint Mary was the only other KCAC team to be recognized, as it received some Top 25 votes but didn’t crack it.

Two KCAC schools were ranked in the first women’s poll, Friends at No. 9 and Southwestern at No. 17. Kansas Wesleyan received some votes, but not enough to make the Top 25.
