NEWTON — It didn’t take long for McPherson High’s Eric Gaeddert to earn a spot in the state swimming meet.

The Bullpup sophomore met two state-qualifying standards during the season opener Tuesday at Newton.

He won the 100 freestyle in 52.7, a time that earned him a state berth. He was third in the 100 breaststroke and an swam the first leg of the 200 freestyle relay in 23.77, which earned him another state berth in the 50 freestyle.

All-in-all, first-time coach Matt Morrow was pleased with his team.

“We had a great first meet, for most of the team it was their first-ever high school meet,” Morrow said.

Because of their lack of numbers, the Bullpups were seventh out of seven teams, Morrow said. However, the Bullpups averaged 22.1 points per swimmer compared to 16.4 for Newton, which won the meet. Thus it was more about quality than quantity for the Bullpups.

Morrow said Spencer Steinert, who was third in the 500 freestyle, was close to qualifying for state and that he should hit the mark soon. Another standout was Maxx Howe, who had a fine race in the 100 butterfly.

Newcomers Jori VanGoethem and Carson Stone also showed a lot of potential, Morrow said.

The Bullpups will compete Saturday in Wichita.
