McPherson High’s boys open the basketball season ranked No. 4 in the KBCA polls announced recently.

The Bullpups, who return three starters from their 2014 state championship team, trail Eudora, Miege and Hays in the preseason Class 4A Division I poll.

Eudora is moving up from 4A Division II after winning a state title last year. Interestingly, it has Miege in its sub-state, so one of them will be staying home in March.

Hays was 23-2 last year and finished fourth in Class 5A as it’s moving down.

Topeka Hayden, which lost to McPherson in the state title game last year, is ranked No. 5. Completing the Top 10 are Paola, Andale, Independence, Ottawa and Abilene.

The McPherson girls, despite losing nearly their entire offensive arsenal from last year, are No. 10.

Predictably, Miege’s girls are ranked No. 1, with the rest of the Top 5 including Paola, Hayden, Ottawa and Wamego. Kansas City Piper is No. 6, with Louisburg, Bonner Springs, Labette County and MHS rounding out the Top 10.

Hesston’s boys and girls, coming off their sweep of the Class 3A state titles last year, both open as preseason No. 1 teams. The Swather boys are followed by Wichita Collegiate, Beloit, Scott City and Nemaha Central. The girls are ahead of Lyons, Cimarron, Nemaha Central and Riley County.

The Moundridge girls are ranked No. 4 in Class 2A behind Central Plains, Washington County and Olpe.
