WICHITA — McPherson High’s boys swimming team finished sixth out of nine teams Saturday in the Maize Invitational, with three of the teams ahead of the Bullpups being Class 6A schools with vastly considerable more resources.

The Bullpups scored 178 points. Ahead of them were Maize (451), Newton (273), Rose Hill (263), Wichita Northwest (212) and Maize South (209).

“Almost all of our swimmers had best times,” MHS coach Matt Morrow said.

Eric Gaeddert continued to pad his state resume by qualifying in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:18.94. He has now made state in three events.

Morrow added that MHS’ 200 freestyle relay team of  Gaeddert, Maxx Howe, Gavin Soukup and Jori VanGoethem is just shy of meeting the state standard and should get it soon. Also nearing a state time is the medley relay team of Gaeddert, Howe, VanGoethem and Spencer Steinert.

The Bullpups have little rest as Tuesday they travel to Hutchinson for a six-team event.

MHS results:

• 200 medley relay – 4. MHS A (Howe, Gaeddert, Steinert and VanGoethem), 1:58.73. 12. MHS B (Chapman, Soukup, Stone and Kramer), 2:22.15.
