A bag of rice. A can of corn. Add some spice for something nice." That's the phrase McPherson County Pre-K and Kindergarten students are learning as United Way shares "Show You Care - VOLUNTEER." The book focuses on a food drive coordinated by Elmer the duck as he teaches his friends about volunteerism. Written by local resident Anne Kirchner, the book is educating and motivating children as part of a reading initiative sponsored by United Way of McPherson County.

The book’s original publication was made possible through a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation’s Children’s Fund administered by the McPherson County Community Foundation. Popular demand required additional books, which were sponsored by Eickbush Production Company, LLC; Land O’ Lakes, Inc.; Leadership McPherson; McPherson Optimist Club; the Michael O’Connor United Way Challenge Grant Fund and WinField Solutions.

Books are available for purchase at several McPherson businesses including Ameriprise Financial Services, Atelier Print & Design, The Bookshelf, First Bank Kansas (north & south branches), and the main branches of Peoples Bank, Sunflower Bank and Home State Bank. Cost is $5.00 per book with all proceeds benefiting the community impact fund at United Way of McPherson County. For more information call 620.241.5152 or email [email protected]
