It’s not even Christmas yet and McPherson’s seventh-grade girls already have reached the 10-win plateau.
MMS is now 10-0 after a 35-10 pasting of Emporia here Monday.
Payton Johnson scored 10 points and Andrea Sweat added nine. MMS led 16-0 after the first quarter.
“The girls came out ready to go in the first half, and then once we pulled off the pressure we fell a little flat,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “We were able to work on some different defenses in the second half. We are becoming more balanced with all of the girls not being afraid to shoot. Peyton Johnson has been stepping up offensively, as she had her second 10-point game in a row.”
The B-team scraped by Emporia, 15-14. The Bullpups, now 6-2, were paced by Shianne Newboles with five points.
“We were down most of the game, but some key free throws, offensive rebounds and man-to-man defense the last few minutes allowed us to take the lead with less than a minute remaining,” MMS coach Jennifer Love said. “Emporia came to win tonight, however, our determination prevailed in the fourth quarter.”
The Bullpups are on the road Thursday to play Salina Lakewood.
