McPherson College’s men’s basketball team can’t afford to let another one slip away.
The Bulldogs host Kansas Wesleyan Thursday night at the Sport Center, their first KCAC home game after opening with a pair on the road.
Mac started in spectacular fashion with a 104-101 come-from-behind victory over nationally ranked Bethany College, but then flat-lined in a 78-70 loss to an improving Bethel team that was picked to finish last in the KCAC preseason poll.
To town now comes the Coyotes, who are one of only two 0-2 teams in the KCAC and they have been pummeled in both games, losing to Friends and Saint Mary by huge margins. Saint Mary had a 62-29 halftime lead against KW on Saturday.
Mac is 4-7 overall and needs this one desperately since powerhouse Tabor comes to town on Saturday to complete the pre-Christmas portion of the schedule.
In the women’s game, the Bulldogs and Coyotes are two of the six KCAC teams at 1-1. The Coyotes are 6-3 overall and the Bulldogs are 2-10.
The game pits Mac coach Gordon Reimer against his old team as he was at the helm when the Coyotes qualified for the national tournament.
The Bulldogs have beaten Bethany and lost to Bethel. Turnovers have plagued the Bulldogs as they committed 51 in their two games last week.
This is a tough week for Mac as Tabor comes to town on Saturday and the Bluejays are regarded as one of the KCAC’s “Big 3” along with Friends and Southwestern, though the defending champion Moundbuilders have started 0-2 after going 18-0 last year in the conference. They have lost to the other two “Big 3” members.
Game time Thursday at the Sport Center is 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men. Saturday’s starting times are 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
