McPherson’s eighth-grade boys held off a Salina Lakewood rally Thursday for a 47-43 victory to move to 5-0 on the season.
“Even though we didn't shoot well from the free throw line, 10 of 23, we were still able to pull out a win,” MMS coach Tyler Brown said. “Jake Alexander, I felt, came up big in today's game with several big rebounds down the stretch, especially with some of them being off of our own missed free throws towards the end of the game.”
Elijah Muheler topped the Bullpups with 16 points, while Kyler Hoppes added 11. MMS was up 11 at the half, but Lakewood unleashed a 3-point barrage in the second half to make it interesting.
“Even though we pulled out another close win, I feel we continue to grow as a team,” Brown said. “As a whole we are continuing to learn more of our playbook every day. This team has capabilities of having an outstanding year, we just have to stay disciplined and execute.”
The B-team is now 3-2 after a 30-27 victory. Parker Stephens led the balanced scoring with seven points.
The Bullpups are home again Tuesday to play Hays.
