Swede cagers, Bethel split twinbill

LINDSBORG — Bethany College's men improved to 2-1 in the KCAC and 7-3 overall Thursday by outracing Bethel 90-79 at Hahn Gym.

Balance continues to be a trademark for the Swedes as four players hit for double figures. Gary Jones had a monster game with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Jonathan Gidson provided instant offense off the bench with 18 points. Larry McLin (14) and Cody Harris (13) also were twin-digit scorers.

Adam Arciniega led Bethel with 28. McPherson High grad Cody Cape had his best game of the year for the Threshers with 14.

The Swedes shot 58 percent in the second half as they extended their 46-34 halftime lead.

Bethany has a good test coming up Saturday night when it hosts Southwestern. The Moundbuilders suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday to Ottawa.

• Bethel women 61, Bethany 47 — The Swedes dropped to 0-3 in the KCAC while Bethel is now 2-1.

The Swedes hung tough for a half, down just 30-27, but managed only 20 points after the break.

Dominique Davis scored 13 points for the Swedes, while Royce Shields and Adriane Davis supplied 11 and 10, respectively. Erin O’Connor had a strong game on the boards with 10 rebounds.

April Harpe had a double-double for Bethel with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Bethany, the only team without a KCAC win, is now 1-10 overall. It wraps up the pre-Christmas portion of the schedule Saturday hosting Southwestern.
