HAYS — McPherson’s seventh-grade girls suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday, as the depleted Bullpups were defeated 36-19 by Hays.
MMS, which played without Andrea Sweat and Josie Strathman due to sickness, were down only 14-11 at the half, but Hays outscored the Bullpups 16-3 in the third quarter.
“The girls played really hard today against a quick, aggressive Hays team, but unfortunately we came away with our first loss of the season,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “For the second game in a row, we were without some key players due to sickness and not having them made a big difference on both ends of the floor. I was proud that the girls kept battling until the end and kept their composure in some tough situations.”
Cassie Cooks led the 11-1 Bullpups with 10 points.
The B-team was a 20-16 winner, holding Hays scoreless in two separate periods. MMS improved to 7-3 behind six points by Nicole Winsky.
“We had only seven players available, and I couldn’t be more proud of the hard work and sportsmanship our girls put forth tonight to bring us to a victory,” MMS coach Jennifer Love said.
The Bullpups’ next action is Jan. 8 when they host Salina South.
