DENVER — A second-half collapse did in Bethany College’s men Friday as they lost 86-76 to Northern New Mexico, a team that outlasted McPherson College in overtime earlier this season.
The Swedes led 41-38 at the half, but couldn’t do much right after the break to fall to 9-4 on the year.
“We were not able to sustain Bethany basketball consistently during the entire 40 minutes," Bethany coach Clair Oleen said. "We had some runs where we got defensive stops and got out and ran, thus creating offense from our stops. We need to develop a tougher mentality so we can play through fatigue, play through tough possessions and play smart. Certainly this is something we need to be focusing on from here on out to obtain the level of success we expect."
Jonathan Gidson came off the bench to lead the Swedes with 21 points, while Cody Harris added 17. Gary Jones scored 14 and Larry McLin contributed 10.
Bethany is off until Jan. 2 when it plays in the Kansas Wesleyan Classic.
