McPherson's Lujano garners national honors

DALLAS — McPherson’s Johnny Lujano, a junior at Southern Methodist University, has combined his talent on the soccer field with his rarefied academics off the field to earn postseason honors.

Lujano, a midfielder for the Mustangs, recently was named to the 2014 NSCAA Men’s Scholar All-America second team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Lujano has a 3.70 grade point average and is majoring in civil engineering and mathematics. On the field, Lujano was named to the NSCAA East Region second team and was an All-American Athletic Conference first-team selection. In addition, Lujano was also a selection to the All-South Region first team.

Lujano started all 18 matches for the Mustangs in 2014, scoring four goals off of penalty kicks to tie him for first on the all-time SMU list for PKs made in a season. He helped SMU to a 10-6-2 record and an appearance in the AAC semifinals.

During his three seasons with the Mustangs, Lujano has played in 55 games, logging 4,761 minutes of action.

• 2014 — Was an NSCAA Scholar All-America second-team and first-team All-Region selection ... also named to the NSCAA All-Region second team ... named to the American Athletic Conference first team ... started all 18 matches for the Mustangs this season tallying four goals off of penalty kicks (4-for-4) and two assists ... Registered 10 shots ... Tied for first on the SMU list for penalty kicks made in a season, tied for fourth with attempts. 

• 2013: Started all 17 matches for the Mustangs ... recorded one assist in a 2-1 win over Hartwick on Sept. 13 ... Registered 14 shots, including five on goal ... Named to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Classic All-Tournament Team ... Logged 1,508 minutes.

• 2012: Played in all 20 games, starting 17... averaged over 82 minutes per game... played 1,643 of a possible 1,920 minutes on the season ... recorded his first career point, an assist, Oct. 17 at FIU ... saw his first action as a Mustang coming in as a sub Aug. 24 against Campbell.

• Prior to SMU: Comes to SMU ranked as the No. 56 player nationally and a four-star recruit by TopDrawerSoccer, No. 117 by ESPN Rise and No. 127 by College Soccer News ... attended Shattuck St. Mary’s High School in Faribault, Minn... captained his team each of the three seasons ... was a member of the U-14 National Team ID Camp ... played for the ODP Region II team in Italy and Costa Rica.

He is the son of John and Carol Lujano of McPherson.
