ABILENE — McPherson High’s wrestling team was able to gain valuable experience Saturday as it competed in the first-ever Abilene Round-Robin Tournament, which gave the competitors plenty of matches.
“It was set up as an 8-team round-robin format to maximize the number of matches wrestled,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “This is exactly the kind of tournament that benefits our young team. All wrestlers got a bunch of matches.”
The Bullpups didn’t field a full team as they were open at three weights, so they finished sixth out of eight teams. Host Abilene was the winner with 183 1/2 points, while other totals were Salina Central (159), Scott City (127 1/2), Smoky Valley (114 1/2) Silver Lake (102), MHS (82), Buhler (73 1/2) and Nickerson (51).
Austin Eldredge continued on his season-long rampage by going 5-0, the only Bullpup to take first place.
“Austin continues to wrestle at a high level, going 5-0 and winning all matches by tech fall or fall,” Kretzer said. “He is really wrestling tough right now. He had a couple of good wrestlers in his bracket. To be undefeated at this point in our year he is really making a statement. After Austin, I thought our upperclassmen really had a good day. Michael McKinney, Ross Regier, Kaleb Jost, Ty Goss and Cole Kretzer all had some good wins against tough competition. These five guys are on a nice little roll heading into the Christmas break.”
MHS returns to action Jan. 8 hosting arch-rival Buhler.
