McPherson’s eighth-grade boys went on an 18-2 third-quarter sizz here Monday to pull away from Emporia, 54-31.
The victory improved the Bullpups to 7-0.
Elijah Muehler shook loose for several layups and 16 points, while Jake Alexander parlayed a hot start into 13.
“The A-boys had a breakout third quarter, causing havoc and winning the quarter 18-2,” MMS coach Tyler Brown said. “It was fun to watch our fullcourt press and 3/4 press working on all cylinders. That was 6 minutes of tremendous defense. Several of our boys are starting to realize the intensity and pressure we are striving for as coaches. If we can duplicate that kind of defense for four quarters or longer stretches of the game against other teams this group will be pretty good.”
The B-team is now 3-4 after a 33-23 setback. Noah Avila and Aren Trost’s six points apiece led MMS.
MMS, which had played its last five games at home, goes on the road Thursday to Salina South.
