McPherson’s seventh-grade A-girls used a strong second half to pull away from Salina South here Thursday, 36-16.
The Bullpups outscored South 22-8 over the final two quarters.
“After the long break, it took a while for the girls to shake off a little rust, but they had great effort all game long,” said MMS coach Jacque Gehrt, whose team is now 12-1. “We were able to capitalize on our height advantage and get some easy putbacks. The girls also stepped up their defense in the second half and I was proud of the intensity they brought.”
Lakyn Schieferecke and Andrea Sweat dominated on the inside for 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The B-team fell to 7-4 on the year with a 20-11 loss. Josie Strathman’s seven points led the Bullpups.
“It was another tough battle against South,” Gehrt said. “The girls fought extremely hard the whole game and never gave up.”
The B-team plays in a tournament Saturday at Salina. Both teams are home Monday against Salina Lakewood.
