NEWTON — McPherson High boys swimming coach Matt Morrow said his team came back in nice form from the Christmas break.

The Bullpups competed in the Newton Invitational on Thursday and Morrow saw a lot of bright spots.

“Nice meet yesterday. Coming off a month since our last meet, the guys were ready to swim,” Morrow said. “We did have almost all best times, with some nice places.”

Eric Gaeddert, already a state qualifier in multiple events, was third in the 200 freestyle but the top 4A swimmer in the event. Morrow added that both relays were close to meeting the state-qualifying standard.

“Several of the boys swam events that they had not competed in before and did really well,” Morrow said.

Another swimmer who caught Morrow’s eye was Jori VanGoethem, who was seventh in the 500 freestyle.

MHS did finish last in the meet, but had a lot of points per swimmer.

The Bullpups get right back into the pool Saturday at El Dorado and will be one of 20 teams in the field.
