SALINA — McPherson’s seventh-grade boys gutted out a hard-earned 38-35 overtime decision over Salina South on Thursday.
Hayes Schmid did yeoman work for the Bullpups, now 6-2, with 22 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer as the clock was winding down.
“The A-team competed their tails off,” MMS coach Treg Fawl said. “We were trailing the entire game until late in the fourth quarter. Cooper Courtney made a big play setting up (Cody) Stufflebean for an easy bucket to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. In overtime we fell behind by three. Kvon (Richardson) came down and hit a huge 3 to tie up the game. Next possession we got a defensive stop and held for the last shot. Hayes made a 3 with about 2 seconds left on the clock to win the game. The team executed down the stretch and we got exactly the look we wanted. I was happy with the way we responded to adversity.”
The B-team also played a nailbiter, but lost 30-29. Riley Koehn and Trenton Stecklein scored eight points apiece. MMS is now 3-5 and plays in a tournament on Saturday in Salina.
Next A-team action is Monday at Salina Lakewood.

MMS B (29) — Koehn 8, Stecklein 8, Hoxie 4, Stockham 3, Moody 2, Stout 2, Whitfield 1, Schrader 1.
