As it turned out, the McPherson High girls’ top challenge Friday at Starlite Lanes came from the Bullpup boys’ team.

The defending state bowling champion MHS girls totaled a 2,266 in their home opener to easily turn back Andale, which scored 1,683.

The MHS girls had a higher score than their boys, whose 2,128 was just good enough to get past the 2,045 by Andale.

Jasmine Wann and Makenzie Benson had fire coming out of their fingertips with 699 and 630, respectively. Wann had a 199 first game, then came back with 256 and 244.

Benson had a 185 first game, then had sets of 235 and 213.

“Jaz was awesome,” MHS coach Herb Halinski said. “She got a bad break on that last ball or she would have shot 700. Makenzie improved from Tuesday, two 600s back to back.”

The rest of the Bullpups had their moments and each contributed to the team win.

“If one struggles, another comes along to support them. They help each other,” Halinski said.

The MHS boys rode the consistency of Carl Frazier for their win. He had games of 205, 210 and 217 for a 632 series and has yet to have a game under 200 this season. Clayton Ouellette finished with a 549, with a 210 in his final game.

“Carl is just consistent,” Halinski said. “Clayton couldn’t carry today. Jeff (Reed) drilled a new ball and it was sticking in his hand. We’ll get that taken care of.”

Andale did not have a JV girls team, while the Bullpups boys were just edged by six pins.

The Bullpups will compete Saturday in the annual Bishop Carroll Baker Tournament.
