LINDSBORG — The best news for the Smoky Valley wrestling team Saturday wasn’t that Austin Cook and Brandon Archuleta won their respective weight divisions in the Augusta Invitational, but that senior Jarod DeMott made his long-awaited return from knee surgery.
DeMott, who tore his ACL over the summer at a football camp in Hutchinson, didn’t disappoint, as he took second place in the 220-pound class and gave the team an emotional lift as it took fourth out of 12 teams.
Bigger schools Andover (201), Augusta (191) and Andover Central (177 1/2) all finished ahead of the Vikings, who totaled 163 points and finished just ahead of 5A power Kapaun (149 1/2).
“I was really pleased with our effort against tough competition,” Smoky Valley coach Ben Elliott said. “Our seniors performed well and our younger kids really battled.”
