It was Lakyn Schieferecke to the rescue here Monday.
Schieferecke, who spent much of the second half in foul trouble, scored on a runner in the lane with 5 seconds left in the game to send McPherson’s seventh-grade girls past Salina Lakewood, 30-28.
Schieferecke had tied the game at 28-all with a free throw. After Lakewood couldn’t score, Schieferecke drove the lane to hit the winner.
“I was so excited for the girls as they pulled out the victory tonight,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said as her team is now 13-1 on the year. “It was a total team effort, as everyone who played made a contribution whether defensively or offensively.”
Schieferecke and Anna Nason scored eight points apiece. MMS led 24-17 at one point in the fourth quarter before Lakewood charged back to make it exciting.
The B-team is now 9-5 after a 19-11 success. N’Dya Collins’ seven points topped the Bullpups.
“After having lost to Lakewood twice this year, including last Saturday, the girls gutted out a victory,” Gehrt said. “The girls played good team defense and keep getting better defensively with each game. We were also able to get the ball inside, as our post players combined for 16 of the 19 points.”
The Bullpups are off until Jan. 22 when they host Hays.
