BUHLER — McPherson High boys coach Kurt Kinnamon was rather cryptic with his postgame remarks following the Bullpups’ eighth straight win Tuesday night, 62-44 over arch-rival Buhler.

“Let’s just say I think we did a good job of persevering through some adversity,” said Kinnamon, whose team survived a choppy game that never had any flow to it as whistles filled the air. “Overall if you grade it, it’s a low B-minus.”

The Bullpups played most of the game without All-State All-Class point guard Kyler Kinnamon, who was tagged with three first-quarter fouls, picked up his fourth early in the second half and finally exited in the fourth quarter with No. 5 after playing just 12 minutes and scoring only four points.

But this game proved the Bullpups have a plethora of weapons as Payton Stephens — who also had three first-half fouls — powered his way to 21 points, Drew Pyle added 13 and Spenser Wine came off the bench for 13 more important points.

The Bullpups are now 5-0 in Division III as they appear to be steaming their way toward another league title.

Buhler was able to muddy up the game in the first quarter to take a 15-13 lead, but a 10-3 Bullpup run midway through the second quarter allowed MHS to inch ahead 27-22 by halftime. It didn’t take long for the Bullpups to stretch it out and what was a close game became a 20-pointer in the fourth quarter.

Kinnamon said for one of the few times this year his team didn’t play with the precision and attention to detail that has come to define it. He was happy, though, that the hostile crowd and curious game flow didn’t cause his team to unravel.

Shawn Davis and Noah Webster led the Crusaders with 11 points apiece.

The MHS JVs came away with a 57-43 victory behind 15 points by Mason Alexander and 10 by Marcus McDaniel. A 17-point salvo by Thomas Diggs and 16 more by Drew Labertew kept the freshmen perfect on the year, 50-32.

The Bullpups go to Rose Hill on Friday.
