ROSE HILL — After a quarter on Friday, the name George Czaplinski was starting to fill the air.

Of all the great players in McPherson High boys basketball history, it’s Czaplinski who holds the Bullpups’ single-game scoring record with 44 points.

The way Drew Pyle started against Rose Hill, Czaplinski’s 53-year-old record appeared to be in jeopardy.

Pyle made 7 of 8 shots in the first quarter for 17 points, but he took only seven shots the rest of the way and finished with 25 points in a 74-55 Bullpup victory.

MHS will take a 9-0 record into Thursday’s McPherson Invitational opener against longtime rival Hutchinson.

Pyle made three 3-pointers in his first-quarter onslaught as the Bullpups led 25-14. But he took only two shots in the second quarter and none in the third.

It was the third quarter when Payton Stephens took over, scoring 14 of his 19 complementary points. Kyler Kinnamon gave the Bullpups three players in double figures with 12.

The Bullpups were never in any serious danger, but the Rockets clawed and scrapped to keep the game from being a 30- or 40-point blowout.

“They did a good job of pushing the ball up the floor,” MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon said. “We didn’t run back and they made easy baskets. We’re trying to guard 6-0 with our bigger guys and we had trouble keeping them in front of us. And so they did a pretty good job. I told the guys a lot of that is their coach (Steve Siemens). He had a pretty darn good game plan.”

The Bullpups, though, did miss a ton of close-range shots and didn’t shoot it well from the foul line (13 of 22). They just seemed a step off the final three quarters, but they have raised the bar so high that a 19-point win sometimes is mistaken for a clunker when the truth is a lot of teams would be happy to win by 19 points.

Brett Bonar led the Rockets with 17 points. Brandon Ma chipped in with 12.

The MHS JVs won 85-54 behind 16 points by Ben Pyle, 15 by Mason Alexander and 13 by Jacob Loecker. The freshmen buried the Rockets 59-19 as Drew Labertew scored 14, Thomas Diggs added 13 and Wyatt Seidl tallied 11.
