NEWTON — If you place high in the Newton Tournament of Champions, you generally are considered a state wrestling championship contender.

McPherson High’s 106-pounder Austin Eldredge, who entered the TOC undefeated, went 5-1 over the weekend to take third place for the Bullpups’ top performance.

Five Bullpups were able to earn Top-8 finishes in a tournament that draws most of the state’s powers from a variety of classes as well as some out-of-state schools.

Andrew Trowbridge at 113 and Ty Goss at heavyweight both went 2-3 to take sixth place. Kaleb Jost (2-3) at 182 and Ross Regier (4-3) at 195 also placed, taking eighth.

MHS took only a partial team as it was open at six weights. Despite that, the Bullpups were 17th out of 27 teams. Garden City was a runaway winner, with Grand Island (Neb.) taking second.

The Bullpups return to dual action on Thursday at Augusta.
