NACOGDOCHES, Texas — McPherson native Brad Underwood is proving that last year was no fluke.
In his first year as head coach at Stephen F. Austin University, Underwood’s Lumberjacks were one of the darlings of the NCAA Basketball Tournament after they upset another former Cinderella story — VCU — 77-75 in overtime before losing to UCLA 77-60 in the round of 32.
The ‘Jacks finished last year with a 32-3 record, and it garnered Underwood numerous coaching awards and made him a national name.
With an upgraded schedule, it was thought the Lumberjacks might fall back. And after a 1-3 start, Stephen F. Austin appeared to be a one-hit wonder. Their losses have been to high-profile programs Northern Iowa (79-77), Xavier (81-63) and Baylor (67-51).
But after Monday’s 79-54 victory over New Orleans, the Lumberjacks now have won 14 in a row to move to 15-3 on the season, 5-0 in conference play.
The Lumberjacks take to the road Saturday to play Sam Houston State and then go to Lamar on Monday.
