There are rolls.

And then there are serious rolls.

Shawnee Mission East, down 7-2 early, went on a 27-5 rampage over a 10-minute span in the first half and went on to defeat Blue Valley West 60-53 in the opening game of Thursday’s McPherson Invitational.

East made 7 of its 8 shots during an 18-6 second quarter and shot 64 percent for the half to lead 29-16.

The Jaguars, however, scored the first eight points of the third quarter and sliced to the lead to six, 40-34.

A pair of 3-pointers by Jay Guastello enabled the Lancers to push the lead back to double digits and they were able to ride it out from there.

"It was tough," said Shawnee Mission East coach Shawn Hair, whose team is now 7-3. "(BVW coach) Donnie (Campbell) has got a great team and he's a great coach. He's a good friend."

Hair said the Lancers' defense on Gammon was a key, as he was held to 10 points and just eight shots.

"Blaise is a beast," Hair said. "We did everything we could to limit his touches."

Hair also was pleased with his team's balance, as four players hit for double figures, led by Gunnar Englund with 13 points. Lucas Jones added 12, along with 12 rebounds, while Guastello and Jack Flint added 11 apiece. The Lancers were 18 of 32 from the field — including 8 of 15 from 3-point — and made 16 of 18 free throws.

Connor Kaiser led the Jags with 11 points, while Gammon and Evan Hailes added 10 apiece.
